Mariposa County islocated in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It lies north of Fresno, east of Merced, and southeast of Stockton. The county seat is Mariposa.
The county's eastern half is the central portion of Yosemite National Park. There are no incorporated cities in Mariposa County and it has the distinction of having no permanent traffic lights anywhere in the county.
During the California Gold Rush, great quantities of the prized mineral were found and extracted, first in local stream-beds and later in hard rock mines. One of the most notable beneficiaries of this wealth was the famed explorer and 1856 Republican presidential candidate, John C. Fremont, for whom the local hospital is named.
Mariposa, "the Mother of Counties", initially encompassed one fifth of the state of California. As the land filled with settlers, boundaries were redrawn until twelve present day counties emerged from the vast area. Today, the legacy from these origins includes an incredible range of landscapes and a heritage of historic sites and towns.
Yosemite's grandeur always looms as a major attraction, but you can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities or see one hundred fifty years of California history, without crowds and without traffic.
