Siskiyou County (pronounced SISS-kyoo) is located in the far northernmost part of California, in the Shasta Cascade region on the Oregon border. Yreka is the county seat.

Because of its substantial natural beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities, and Gold Rush era history, it is an important tourist destination within the state. From towering Mount Shasta (elev. 14,179 ft) near the center of the county, to lakes and dense forests, as well as desert, chaparral, and memorable waterfalls, the county is home to world-famous trout-fishing rivers and streams, such as the Sacramento and McCloud Rivers.

The county is dotted with lakes and reservoirs, such as Castle Lake and Lake Siskiyou. The town of Mount Shasta itself has a winter sports center. Pastoral Scott Valley in the western part of the county has many wide, tree-lined meadows, supporting large cattle ranches.

The town of Weed is about 10 miles west-northwest of Mount Shasta, the second-tallest volcano in the Cascade Range. Visitors use Weed as a base to engage in trout fishing in the nearby Klamath, Sacramento and McCloud Rivers, or come to see and climb Mount Shasta, Castle Crags or the Trinity Alps. Visitors also engage in nearby skiing (both alpine and cross-country) and biking, or hike to the waterfalls, streams and lakes in the area, including nearby Mossbrae Falls, Lake Siskiyou, Castle Lake and Shasta Lake.
